THE SHETLAND SHEEPDOG
Origin One of the top obedience competition breeds, the Sheltie is extremely smart. The Shetland Sheepdog was first recognized in England in 1909, and first registered in the United Stated in 1911. Because of his kindly disposition, the Sheltie has become one of todays most popular companion dogs. Some of the Shelties talents include: tracking, herding, watchdogging, guarding, agility, competitive obedience, and performing tricks. The Shetland Sheepdog descended from Scottish Rough Collies, which are larger in size (like Lassie). They were brought to the Scottish island of Shetland and crossed with the Icelandic Yakkin, a small island dog. The Yakkin today is now no longer recognized. The result of the cross breeding was the Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie, a smaller size version of the larger Scottish Rough Collie. The Shelties were often called "Toy Collies" due to their exact likeness to the Rough Collie but in miniature proportions. By 1700, the breed was completely developed. For centuries these little dogs were used to herd and guard the sheep flocks of the Shetlands, those rugged islands off the Scottish coast where many of the animals are rather small in stature. Refinement of the breed took place mainly in the twentieth century after the export of Shelties to mainland Scotland and beyond. These small shepherds were very gentle when herding the miniature stock. Temperament The Shetland Sheepdog is an outstanding companion dog with a delightful temperament. Gentle, sensitive, loyal and dainty. Very lively, intelligent and trainable. The Shetland Sheepdog is one to the smartest breeds, very willing to please and obey. These dogs are so smart that many fanciers consider them to have almost human intelligence. Loving, loyal and affectionate with its family, but suspicious with strangers. It is a good guard and watchdog. Socialize extensively as a puppy. The Sheltie is above all an intelligent herder, capable both of commanding large cattle and holding small sheep in check. The herding instinct is still very strong in many of them. Because of its beauty and kindness, the Sheltie has become a popular companion dog.
CARING FOR THE COAT OF A SHETLAND SHEEPDOG
The Shetland Sheepdog(Sheltie is a double coated breed and requires the minimum of one thorough brushing a week to maintain cleanliness and health. During sheds, daily attention is a Must . Most adult ,neutered Shelties cast coat once a year. When Puppie's blow their coats it seems as if there is fur everywhere, but this only happens once. Generally dogs(males) have heavier coats than bitches(females). However unspayed bitches moult the most, shedding with every seasonal cycle, rather than yearly, more reasoning for having your female fixed as soon as possible. Bitches also lose most of their coat after each litter. Don't be dissappointed if your puppie's dam loses all of her fluffy coat and looks scadly clad. Your spay or neutered pets coat need never look that scadly naked.
The other challenge to owning a Sheltie is that they are notorious barkers To some extent this varies with the indivual .but as a breed they are know to be vocal ,possessing a penetrating bark.
The Sheltie is generally healthy and hardy, generally even-tempered and highly intelligent. This breed adapts well to apartment and condominium living as long as it receives sufficient mental and physical exercise. All in all, a terrific family pet, companion, show competitor and/or working dog.
